A very unscientific poll for Adies Pupil sufferers.

Adies pupil/underactive thyroid

In my 30s I could 'feel' a sensation in my eyes which I caught by looking in the mirror. My pupil was regularly changing shape - oval and a figure 8. I went to the GP who treated me as if I was completely mad - didn't I know pupils were supposed to contract/expand?! He sent me to a specialist where Adies pupil was diagnosed.

I was told there was no known cause, no known cure and no known implications. I can't really say that it has bothered me at all apart from the fact that I can still feel the pupil altering shape (when I'm tired) and I notice that I have one pupil smaller than the other, though nobody else has commented on it so I guess it's not that noticeable, though it does freak my kids out if I tell them to 'look into my eyes'!!

My eyesight has recently deteriorated a little and I will be going for an eye check soon - but I'm sure this is down to natural ageing.

On another website I've read that this condition can be linked to autoimmune diseases (I have an underactive thyroid). It also mentioned that some areas of the body don't sweat which I also have (but I'm quite happy to put up with that!).

For the record, my eyes are hazel. Does anybody else have a thyroid condition?

Holmes Adies Pupil

I was diagnosed with Adies at age 12, I'm now 33. Originally it was only my left eye, now both eyes are affected. I have a chronic cough and my reflexes are slow to non-exsistent. My eye sight is progressively worsening. Am told it's just something you have to deal with. My understanding is that I am one of the more rare cases, but that certainly doesn't me feel terrible. It's just one more thing that makes me fabulously unique. :-)

HOLMES ADIES PUPIL 18 YEARS

I HAVE HAD ADIES PUPIL FOR 18 YEARS NOW. YOU DO GET USED TO IT. I HAVE BROWN EYES AND AM A 52 YEAR OLD FEMALE. I AM REALLY GOOD AT CLOSING THE AFFECTED EYE IN BRIGHT LIGHT, I DO IT AUTOMATICALLY. I WEAR GLASSES TO SEE DISTANCES. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE LOOKING AT AN OVER EXPOSED PHOTOGRAPH THROUGH MY BAD EYE.

TRY LOOKING IN A MIRROR WHEN YOU HAVE HAD AN ALCOHOLIC DRINK, YOU WILL FIND THE EYE MUSCLES MORE RELAXED AND YOUR EYE WILL REACT MUCH QUICKER! NOT THAT I THINK YOU SHOULD DO THIS ALL THE TIME!!
I HAVE ALSO BEEN A GUINEA PIG IN HOSPITAL FOR THE STUDENTS TO DIAGNOSE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD I WILL JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE CONDITION. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT MINE HAS NOT GOT ANY WORSE SINCE IT WAS DIAGNOSED 18 YEARS AGO.

I ALSO GET A COUGH EVERY YEAR THAT HAS LASTED UP TO 14 WEEKS. SOMEONE ELSE MENTIONED THIS.

I HAVE JUST HAD AN EYE EXAMINATION AND BOTH MY EYES WERE FINE AND THE BACK OF MY EYE WAS AS WELL.

EVERYBODY JUST GET ON AND ENJOY LIFE AS THERE ARE MUCH WORSE THINGS OUT THERE... CHIN UP

Thanks...

for sharing and for the encouraging words. I just got diagnosed and even though I know it is so minor, it is still very strange to be affected like this. I'm glad to find other people here that are willing to share about Adie's syndrome...
